**** OT **** << so proud of its freedom of expression, etc, yet, every single time if I express some opinions different from others, I was often times to be called "communists, apologists for the communist regime" >>

Freedom of speech, the press, etc. do NOT mean other people cannot disagree with you. They mean the government cannot punish you for expressing your opinions.

Has the US government threatened you?

............OT.............

I agree that it is surprising that people want to stifle freedom of speech here in America. I guess they would say that they have the freedom to tell you to shut up, but IMHO that means that they've lost the argument. The civil thing to say is "let's agree to disagree."

I was also surprised to read many people say that INS will deport you for speaking out. If that is true, it is wrong. America has a history of mistreating people who came from a country we are at war with. In World War I, the Germans - there was so much prejudice against people with German last names that many of them changed their names to avoid persecution. In World War II, the Japanese - we all know about the relocation camps, a national disgrace. During the Cold War, we hated Russians, except for the Bolshoi Ballet.<g> There is now a great deal of prejudice against Middle Easterners. People who are from Iran say they are from Persia. People who are from Iraq don't say where they are from.

Right now, I think Americans like the Chinese people because they are hard-working, educated, and cultured. We don't like the Chinese government because we don't like communism, and mainland China has a regrettable record on human rights. But the people and the government are not the same in our minds, I think that's pretty much the way Americans feel about it. But if there should be military confrontation, who knows what will happen? We have done bad things before, so why not again?

I hope not.

Yiwu,
I agree with you about the US getting into too much around the world. I have no solutions but I think it is time that the US back off. This stuff would not have happened with Bush, Reagan or even Carter as pres. You have some good points. But it might be time to let the issue drop. None of us have any say in what will happen.
