That's a theoretical maximum. AMD can do it, but I don't think anyone should expect AMD to try, at least for the next two years or so.

I understand that adding memory to Athlon is easier than adding memory to the Xeon due to the packaging design of Athlon providing for standard package compatability. If the cache parts are available, and do not cause a problem inreliability, I do not see why they would not include as much of it as they can. There are some customers that do not care about cost that just want the biggest one.
