Qualcomm Beats Expectations

For Third-Quarter Earnings
An INTERACTIVE JOURNAL News Roundup

Qualcomm Inc. reported earnings late Monday that beat expectations, amid strong sales of communications systems.

For the fiscal third quarter ended June 27, the San Diego telecommunications company posted net income of $58.9 million, or 35 cents a diluted share, compared with earnings of $5.8 million, or four cents a share, a year ago.

The current results include charges of $117 million from the sale of the company's Code Division Multiple Access wireless unit. Excluding the charges, the company earned $135 million, or 75 cents a diluted share.

The consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call was for earnings of 63 cents a share. Revenue, meanwhile, rose 14.7% to $1 billion from $875.5 million a year earlier.

The company cited increased sales of communications systems, including Application Specific Integrated Circuits, OmniTracs units and Code Division Multiple Access phones, as well as a significant increase in royalties, for the increased revenue.
