<I think most people are like me (when it comes to buying computers, anyway). That is, I want to pay as little as possible, because it is the fastest depreciating thing I will ever buy.>

I'm turning more like that, and so are many hobbyists.

However, there are many people (like my parents) who want to buy as much computer as possible, just so that they can make their purchase last longer. Paying a little more up front is much easier for them than replacing the computer more often than they have to.

A similar thing exists for businesses. They want their PC's to last quite a while, so that their IT departments aren't bogged down with replacing PC's once a year. They'll pay a little more for a longer upgrade cycle and for easier IT management.
