here is the long link. and Threaded Threads

First..SI Classic is better with long links. The long link in your post causes (in the beta site)the entire message to be stretched beyond the limits of my 21 inch monitor..making it almost impossible to read comfortably. Classic keeps the message readable and hides some of the link.

In the view ten messages option it stretches all messages. Fixed fonts seem to cause a similar problem.

Back to 'threaded threads' <g>

SI already has threaded discussions and IMO the SI threads are among the best. I do not see much similarity between SI threads and deja news's approach. Deja news uses an after the fact approach to organizing someone elses threads..more suited to research IMO.

I frequent several message boards...all of them have some kind of outline format. The outlines seem to be an attempt to separate conversations into 'threads' ie separate topics of conversation.

SI uses a different approach. The threads are organized on the book mark page but they are still threads.

Hence I believe we are talking about threaded threads We are asking for threads when we already have threads.

I have always returned to SI for the best conversations...as I prefer the format here. I rarely look at the thread listing. I only see the thread header once..when I first sign onto a thread. Thereafter I go directly to a thread and start reading where I left off. Just like a book...one post after the next. (also make use of the view responses to message...at least I used to..the beta site design in the new 10 message style of reading does not have the option...:(

I find that many posters do not post to the correct post..either because they are new and do not know how or in some cases..well several reasons...suffice it to say that not everyone posts in a format conducive to an outline.

I am not disagreeing that an outline may have some benefits in SOME cases.

One of my favorite implementation is at www.deja.com

I read several news groups. I find the posts that come from deja 'out of place' in the threads on the news groups. I do not think they benefit the newsgroup threads..not from the point of view of thread continuity. (if one can even discuss the continuity of a newsgroup thread...100 posts would be considered a very long thread in a newsgroup..100 posts would be considered a thread in its infancy at SI) If the deja news format is better then why are the threads so short?

SI has quality threaded discussions that are unique to SI.

I have never had trouble following a thread on SI. Sure several conversations are going on at the same time but that parallels normal conversations. ie Perhaps I talk to my brother in the morning..my kid before he goes to work..say hi to my wife...go to a meeting at work where several topics are discussed....I do not need an outline to follow the multiple conversations.

I agree from a research point of view (that is the way I view deja news) seeing outlines has advantages. I do not agree that outlining threads in real time..threaded threads is beneficial to the SI thread format.

If the outlines can be implemented in an unobtrusive manner then go for it IMO.
