E*man:

I wish the takeover of TBFC happens faster. This is a very key acquisition. If you look at the business model carefully, deposits from TBFC will channel to E*Offering to strengthen its position as an underwriter. Anybody in the investment banking knows that underwriting is big business and extremely lucrative. What happens is E*Offering needs the broad customer base for it to distribute the shares. Traditional investment bankers have wealthy clients and institutions so they don't need a big client base to work with. Since E*Trade's clients are generally less affluent, in order to be successful in the IPO business, it needs a much bigger base to distribute. I think the critical mass is about 2 million client accounts. With the current account growth, it should reach that number sometime at the end of this year or early next year. Then the real fun will begin, E*Offering will go after the IPO market big time as lead manager because the seed money will be available from TBFC and the client base to support IPO or secondary offering at E*Trade should be ready at that time.
