ICQ, Inc. and Net2Phone Sign Four-Year, Multi-Million Dollar Internet Telephony Agreement

July 20, 1999 08:47 AM
DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 1999--

ICQ to Distribute Net2Phone Internet Telephony Services to Create Global Internet Calling Network; Will Enable ICQ Members to Place and Receive Calls Between Computers and Phones

ICQ/Net2Phone Relationship to Include ICQ Internet Telephony Calling Card and Free PC-to-PC Calls for ICQ Members

ICQ, the world's largest online communications community (www.icq.com), has entered into a four-year agreement with Net2Phone, a leading Internet Telephony provider (www.net2phone.com).

Under the terms of the deal, Net2Phone's Internet Telephony services will be provided through ICQ to give anyone with an ICQ membership, a PC and Internet access the ability to place and receive voice phone calls through the Internet. These Internet Telephony services will carry the ICQ brand, will be powered by Net2Phone, and will provide ICQ's more than 38 million registrants with low-cost international and domestic voice telephone calling capabilities.

In connection with the agreement, ICQ will work with Net2Phone to create numerous ICQ-branded Internet Telephony products and services. First, this fall, ICQ will offer its members an ICQ-branded Internet Telephony phone card, which will give such members the ability to make low-cost phone-to-phone calls using the Internet as a carrier. Later, Net2Phone and ICQ will unveil other services to allow ICQ members located virtually anywhere in the world to place and receive voice telephone calls in at least three different ways:

-- Phone-to-PC: This option will allow an ICQ member to place a call from a traditional phone to another ICQ member's Internet-enabled PC (equipped with standard computer speakers and a microphone);

-- PC-to-Phone: This option will allow an ICQ member to place a call from his or her Internet-enabled PC to another ICQ member listening and speaking through a traditional telephone;

-- PC-to-PC: This option will allow two ICQ members with Internet-enabled PCs to place and receive voice telephone calls using their standard computer speakers and microphones.

ICQ members will be able to sign up for the IP Telephony services directly through a secure transaction area on the ICQ Web site using their existing credit card. The services will not require any special hardware beyond a typical, Internet-enabled multi-media computer with speakers and a microphone. This new service will initially be offered free of charge for PC-to-PC calls, offering ICQ members a comparatively cheap, fun and convenient way to keep in touch with friends and family.

"Now, ICQ members all over the world will be able to communicate with one another by talking, not just typing," said Donn Davis, COO of AOL Interactive Properties Group, which oversees the ICQ service. "With Net2Phone, we will introduce ICQ members to yet another revolutionary way to use the Internet to better communicate with their friends and colleagues in a fun and affordable way."

About ICQ:
