Computers Internet Use Poised For Huge Increase With Broadband Helene Zampetakis 07/20/1999 Australian Financial Review Page 31 Copyright of John Fairfax Group Pty Ltd The latest research on the world's top websites shows they are reaping the benefits of increased user valuations and are poised to win from the shift to broadband services. Research by analysts at Internet.com has found that the top 10 websites last month enjoyed a 17 per cent jump in the average market value of each of their users. The group found that average user value jumped by $US27 ($40.8) to $US250 ($378) in June while median value rose by $US57 to $US487. Internet.com calculated the figures by assessing the market capitalisation of each portal and estimating the number of unique individuals using them. Further research by US-based market watcher, Datamonitor, has suggested that internet accounts will multiply fivefold over the next five years, driven by a rapid uptake of broadband technology. The report predicts that by 2003, there will be nearly 545 million internet user accounts globally from a current level of 95 million users this year, surpassing the number of PCs installed worldwide. The report comments that content specialists such as AOL, Excite@home and Yahoo! will be well positioned to take advantage of this shift to broadband. Internet.com found that AOL is now top of the list of internet portals with 46.2 million unique users and a per user value of $US378; Microsoft is second, with 32.4 million users; Yahoo! is third, followed by Lycos, The Go Network, Geocities, Excite@Home, Time Warner and Blue Mountain Arts. However, Amazon.com, which was only the 10th top site with 10 million unique users, had by far the highest median per user value at $US1,751. Meanwhile another report by internet market watcher, PC Data, confimed Amazon.com's rank as the top shopping website with US consumers; eBay.com ranked second. Compounding these figures, Datamonitor predicted that the internet industry will undergo enormous growth by 2003, by which time a third of all residential users will choose high-speed access. That would trigger a boom in the internet service provider (ISP) equipment industry, Datamonitor said in a report called Powering the Internet Revolution: 1999-2003. The report forecasts a quadrupling of growth in the industry for network equipment, driven by greater bandwidth consumption per internet service provider subscriber. Datamonitor noted that the number of residential broadband subscribers worldwide reached 700,000 by 1998. The report estimates that the ISP equipment market will be worth about $US15billion in 2003, fuelled by the increasing size of customer bases and a rise in demand for richer service portfolios.
