Subject: WAR DOG PETITION FOR COMMEMORATIVE STAMP
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 14:47:03 GMT
From: "Maria T. Anderson" <mta1@cwix.com>
Newsgroups: rec.pets.dogs.rescue

The Vietnam Dog Handlers Association (includes handlers from ALL
wars) is requesting 100,000 or more signatures on petitions that will
be given to the Post Office AGAIN this year to request a commemorative
stamp for dogs that served in all wars and were directly responsible
for hundreds of thousands of men and women coming safely home.
84,000 signatures were collected from children and adults nationally
last year. The war dogs' stamp request was turned down in favor of
Bugs Bunny, Marilyn Monroe, and a Salute to Crayons stamps. The
reason given was that this was long ago and there was no interest in
recognizing these faithful and courageous animals.

The movie "War Dogs" was presented on the Discovery Channel
Feb. 16, 1999. Nature's Recipe Dog food produced the movie and video
and offers it free with the purchase of dog food. Books have been
written...one by the VDHA national historian..."War Dogs - Canines in
Combat" by Mike Lemish and one by cultural anthropologist
Mary Thurston. "Lost History of the Canine Race" and by William Wynne,
WWII war correspondent, "Yorkie Doodle Dandy" - about a little Yorkie
found on one of the islands that helped make an airbase operational,
entertained troops, and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.

The VDHA wants no money, no one will contact individuals signing the
petitions. Every dog lover is asked to collect signatures, addresses
of family and friends on a paper with this heading:

K-9 CORPS COMMEMORATIVE STAMP REQUEST
The K-9 Corps was established in November 1942, and served with
distinction throughout every war and condflict since that time. With their
keen sense of smell and hearing these dogs were instrumental in saving
thousands of lives by giving early warning of snipers, ambushes, etc.
Please remember these forgotten heroes in a commemorative stamp.
Anyone can sign individual name, address, (please do not use Mr. and
Mrs. or ditto marks under addresses). Please send your completed
petition to:
Mike Lemish
VDHA Historian
14 Baker Way
Westboro, MA 01581-1406

(It is NOT NECESSARY TO PRINT YOUR PERSONAL HOME ADDRESS
ON THE PETITIONS. Please use your work or business address or
post office box address to insure your privacy.)

Several State Police Canine Units and local Humane Societies and
Rescue Groups have joined us in this quest. Petitions will be presented
to the Post master General on November 11, 1999 Veterans Day.

Please check out the VDHA web sites and veteran handler Charlie Cargo's
wardog sites online. If some of these have been updated, use "War Dogs"
as your search words.
