EarthLink Members Get Internet Savvy With Trendy Magazine and Electronic Newsletter -- bLink and eLink;
PASADENA, Calif., Jul 20, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) --
EarthLink's Innovative and Popular Publications Prove Successful as
Member Education and Retention Tools
Ask most people what features they expect with an Internet access account, and a glossy magazine and an electronic newsletter probably won't be mentioned.

But ask an EarthLink (NASDAQ: ELNK) member, and Internet-focused publications are likely to be near the top of the list. That's because of bLink, EarthLink's bimonthly member magazine and eLink, EarthLink's weekly quick-read electronic newsletter.

In fact, bLink has the largest circulation of any Internet magazine. It is distributed free to EarthLink's 1.3 million-plus members as part of the most comprehensive member benefits package in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry. And for those who just can't get enough of the Net, there's eLink. Just a year after its launch, more than 600,000 EarthLink members have signed up for eLink, receiving a copy each week by e-mail.

Together, bLink and eLink help satisfy the demand for Internet education. For EarthLink members, they are a significant benefit above and beyond Internet access and related services they receive from EarthLink.

"Beyond providing a solid Internet connection and outstanding support, EarthLink strives to make our members Internet savvy," said Veronica Murdock, vice president of member support and services at EarthLink. "Our bLink and eLink publications help members manage the Internet -- showing them what the Net offers, what's new and how to use it. In that respect, the publications are Internet tour guides -- and they're outstanding tools for helping us build member relationships and instill member loyalty."

In fact, many EarthLink members can't seem to get enough of bLink and eLink. More than 60 percent of respondents in the most recent bLink reader survey said they would like to receive bLink more frequently, and no one said they'd like to receive it less frequently.

Murdock added, "The positive feedback we receive about bLink, the outstanding response to eLink and the success of our other free `above-and-beyond' offerings validates our view that people want to learn and become Internet experts. While other services `dumb-down' the Internet experience to appeal to the lowest common denominator, we educate, empower and instill confidence in our members so that they can chart their own course through cyberspace. As a result, they get the best personal Internet experience possible."

The popularity of bLink and eLink is directly attributable to their fun, lively style. Compelling feature articles, combined with helpful columns like "Tech Tips" and "EarthLink Help Central" are presented in a way that's appealing and easy for Internet "newbies" to understand, yet pertinent to experienced Net surfers.

The educational value of bLink and eLink is enhanced by links to interesting Web sites that accompany the articles and columns. More than 80 percent of bLink readers who responded to the recent survey said they visit Web sites after reading about them in the magazine. The links help EarthLink members broaden their Internet horizons with engaging sites they might not otherwise have know about.

Other free EarthLink member benefits include the highly customizable Personal Start Page and Click-n-Build, EarthLink's personal Web site creation tool. These features go above and beyond simply providing reliable Internet access and award-winning customer support; they give EarthLink members the tools to make the Internet a truly relevant part of their lives.

According to Murdock, bLink and eLink also are achieving this goal. "Based on the feedback we receive, these publications have really become a part of our members' lives. They look forward to receiving them like they look forward to the Sunday paper."

EarthLink members can subscribe to eLink on the EarthLink homepage at www.earthlink.net. For more information about EarthLink and its award-winning Internet access, Web hosting and e-commerce services, call 800/395-8425 or visit www.earthlink.net.
