Anindo, fundamentally, the link is largely determined by the issue of international capital flows - if the dollar sinks, foreigners are bailing out of U.S. financial assets.

just look at the charts of the SPX and the dollar index and you will notice a high degree of correlation.

Anindo; If you will look back at last years market correction
it will become clear. The market dived 19% by our standards,
at the same time the dollar fell 8% , Foreigners saw a total
of a 27% correction. The international investment banks do
currency swaps ( and work like a brotherhood ) they see and work
our market volatility via the move plus the dollar move, and
I'm convinced CreemSpam plays up to them.
So they work this volatility and for them it's lot more than for
the average trader, in fact to some extent they create the
volatility.
It's one of the reasons I have long advocated a TOBIN tax on
currency swaps, there is very little about this market that
is honest but get use to it, it's been that way as far back
as I can look at it, and about the time we get some rules in
they find another loophole to bleed the so called investors.
Even the indexes are window dressed.
