Thanks Joe, You may want to try a long leather leash to get Lava to heal. Now you animal rights people don't give me a hard time for this method as a dog at heal can keep itself from getting run over or shot so this lesson for a dog is a favor for rest of his or her life.
Remember the movie "Dances with Wolves" when the wolf was very coy about taking food from Kevin's hand? Next time you see the movie look for a very thin wire in the shot. That tiny wire is what kept that tame wolf from just snatching the food. We will expand on that.
Put Lava on a long leather leash and have her sit. Tell her what a good girl she is and then get her attention with a loud "heal" and start walking. Choke up on the leash so she has to be at your side. Now swing the long portion of the leash in front of her as you and she walk. She may try to grab it, once. She may walk into it, once. If she gets hit in the nose, it won't hurt her as you just swing it fast enough for her to see something she doesn't want to walk into. If she gets clipped it is no harder than dogs play with each other (a paw over another dog's nose is common, often hard) this is how dogs tell each other they want to play.
If you try this, Lava will heal and soon you won't need to swing the leash at all. She will feel safer at your slide. For you non dog owners heal is very important to a gun dog. It can save the dog's life or avoid a hunting accident. BTW, hunting is one of the safest sports there is.
