No one has mentioned the DASD announcement. Remember back a few months when we were discussing the upcoming Shark announcement. It appears that what was promised has been released. The deal they have with STK has to be tough on margins buying at the OEM level of trade. You are at their mercy and IBM did not negotiate out of strength, more hat in hand since they had no competitive product. Now that has changed with the home grown new DASD line that is cross platform. This is more than just a mainframe server storage sub-system. It also scales to AS/400 and Risc. And instead of buying this DASD on an OEM deal IBM can now be an OEM to others which is another whole business area that they excel in with low end DASD. Next stop on the announcement trail will probably be new Risc Servers based upon various industry sources. Taking on EMC today and HP and Sun in a month or so.
