Eric- I'd recommend two things to you; "UNIX Philosophy" (book) by Mike Gancarz (sp), and a newer Linux version like Caldera or Mandrake (tweaked Red Hat compiled for Pentium and inclusive of more and updated KDE and GNOME stuff). The book is small and as easy read, but it really helps someone coming from the DOS world (like you and I) "get there" faster with regard to Unix. I think too that Linux is your man (tiny man inside of a penguin suit). Probably your best bet is to go to Costco (or wherever) and pick up the McMillan Linux (~$25-$30), which is a well documented Mandrake (RedHat w/KDE ++), and (BOnus) Partition Magic (plus Boot Magic, I think), which is the ascended solution for dual boot systems. Just remember not to let RedHat's "Disk Druid" do any partitioning. Use Partition Magic for that from NT. If you do this, please send me PM to share your impressions and questions.

The door is open for SUNW to deliver an affordable solution that the industry
will follow if an easy end-user workable OS is provided.

Well, it depends which industry you're talking about. You're right, Sun seems to have enough on it's profitable plate with executing it's core stuff (ISPs, Telcos, and a world increasingly hungrier for large networks), plus getting the Java trump card from out of it's cuff.

I think you'll see the 'end user' (M$ context) action pretty much all take place on the GNU-Linux/open source front. Solaris will benefit from that in obvious ways. Sun benefits in a big way from the overall *nix mindshare windfall.
