I don't like VA Research (or is it VA Linux now?) for the simple reason that their hardware is a commodity (intel) and their OS is a commodity (Linux). All it takes is one of the big boys like Compaq, Dell, IBM or HP to start selling Linux pre-installed on their full range of Intel-based boxes and VA is reduced to competing on price.

Well when I look at a company and evaluate for growth I look at several things. Iron companies have a limit in growth and a loss risk because of inventory. Va research is an iron company. The next consideration is what is the starting size of the company. Applix is a very small company and has 2.50 in cash per share of their stock. I listened in on their conference call today and it seem that they got a .5 million contract for applixware for aix. They got it because the company evaluated applixware on a linux platform. Suse sells Linux Office 99. (It's 95% Applixware) It was also hinted by CEO that a Kosy up betwix Caldera and Applix may be in the works.

It also seems that six or seven Market Analysts asked questions.
Currently only three Analysts are currently following Applix. dailystocks.net Could be some announcements are forthcoming about starting coverage.

Applix sell applixware an office suite that will allow 90% of folks who use MS office do 100% of what they do with MS office. Applixware runs on all flavors of Unix and on the borg OSes. Applix also sells enterprise software products but Applix is a smaller players in those markets. The mindshare and name recognition Applix is garnering throught Linux will in my opinion translate into continuing growth of Applix Linux product and other Applix product revenue.

There are only 11.1 million shares of Applix. I believe it is the best Linux play on fundamentals and with SmartBreak.com and applixanyware.com, Applix may be the market romantic Linux play.

Corel may also have some legs from Linux. Corel may also have some fundamentals going for it.

But it the near term share valuations of Linux stocks may be strictly a function of location, location, location. So Redhat may rule.
