Anyone selling short today would also be selling the dividend. Covering tomorrow won't have the dividend attached, so they must somehow account for that. Does anyone have any understanding on how this situation is handled?

You are absolutely right concerning the shorting. This situation was likely "short heaven" for some smart market makers and we will see them cover tomorrow. I don't see the shorting affecting the dividends in any way.
