Motorola Gets $1.4 Mln Iridium Order From US State Department


Washington, July 20 (Bloomberg) -- Motorola Inc., the No. 2 cellular telephone company, said it received a $1.4 million order from the U.S. State Department to supply 9,500 Iridium LLC's portable phones that can be used anywhere in the world.

Schaumberg, Illinois-based Motorola, with 1998 revenue of $29.4 billion, manufactures Iridium's satellite phones. The State Department has about 260 diplomatic posts and consulates worldwide and provides support for about 30 other government agencies. Motorola has an 18 percent stake in Iridium.

The State Department will use the phones to expand its global communications systems and strengthen security. Washington- based Iridium, the world's first provider of a global satellite network, lets subscribers communicate in remote locations using one phone, one pager and one phone number with costs packaged in a single monthly bill.

Motorola shares fell 4 1/8 to 90 1/2. Iridium stock fell 3/16 to 6 9/16.
