(MRK) exercised an option to purchase additional voltage ion probe reader systems, for use in ion channel drug discovery, from Aurora Bisciences Corp. (ABSC). In a press release Tuesday, Aurora Biosciences said Merck's option to buy the systems was included in the collaborative research and license agreement reached by the companies in December 1997. The screening systems, in conjunction with Aurora's proprietary voltage sensor dyes, were designed to facilitate high-throughput screening for ion channel targets. Merck, Whitehouse Station, N.J., is a pharmaceutical company. Aurora Biosciences is a biotechnology company
