Coby,
We live in a small town of about 15,000, a small suburb of Dallas and Fort Worth. There were a lot of merit scholars in Dallas, I'm sure, and probably in Fort Worth. We have just the one high school- with a student body of about 1500. The Post seemed to be covering most of the Northern Va. area.

I think the National Merit Scholarships are given by the colleges, rather than being distributed according to merit among the applicants. I went to a college that brags that it has more Merit winners than any other college but it has focused on getting sponsorship from business for its own scholarships.
