Being a sales & marketing guy, I suppose I have a greater respect than you seem to for what Michael Dell and company have accomplished.

Yes, there is nothing special about their boxes, but boy-o-boy they have been moving a lot of them for a long time (at least in PC years.) They've been the PC industry's #1 direct marketer since there was a PC to directly market. Pick up an old copy of Computer Shopper and compare who used to be there with those who are there now. If you go back more than 2-3 years, there is precious little overlap.

There are marketing reasons for that even engineers can understand. (This is where I would usually put a joke, but its too late at night.)
