I thought Tow traded tax lien certificates for his shares. It is not clear to me what his basis was to begin with on these certificates. Let's face it, if Jack had convinced people that those shallow opportunity TLC's were worth the book valuation of the minerals in the US Geological reserve estimates, he stood to possibly reap a 50 or so fold return on his investment.

I wouldn't shed tears for Tow.
