It really has nothing to do with RMBS, but in my opinion the biggest problems of VESA had to do with the size of the board, and the mechanical problems - the cards were difficult to reliably insert and remove without bending pins. PCI cards are small and easy to insert by comparison. If PCI had been a solution in search of a problem Intel would have had a much harder time getting it accepted, but VESA had some problems that PCI solved.
