Sprint PCS buys new phones from Qualcomm

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 20 (Reuters) - Wireless telecommunications network service company Sprint PCS Group on
Tuesday said it agreed to buy an additional $400 million worth of the latest digital wireless phones from Qualcomm
Inc.(Nasdaq:QCOM - news)

The new thin models also will allow users to connect Internet Media Network Yahoo! Inc.'s My Yahoo! customized page to
access information such as electronic mail, weather, sports and stock market reports.

The deal follows a similar one Sprint announced with Finnish telecommunications company Nokia June 15. That deal was worth $500 million.

Although the company declined to say how many phones the deal would entail, it will be enough to satisfy demand through 2000, Sprint Spokesman Tom Murphy
said.

The QCP-1960 model phone will cost $99.99 and run solely on Sprint PCS' wireless network, which covers about two-thirds of the United States. The QCP-2760,
which will cost about $129.99 will be able to access an outside cellular network, when Sprint's network is not available, Murphy said. The company also will offer a
phone equipped with personal digital organizer and Palm Pilot software for $799.99.

Murphy said the cost of the service has not yet been set.
Sprint said it expects to begin selling the phone in
September.
The Yahoo! service is expected to be available in the

fourth quarter 1999, Sprint said.

Qualcomm has been supplying Sprint with phones since 1996, Murphy said.
