I use a rule that the 2-3 bars following a long candle should not retrace it. That and what you're mentioning seem to go back to the information hidden in the time frame below the long candle. IOW on a daily long candle, the 5-min charts likely contain "major" congestion zones that the issue worked through on that day before popping. So price remembers on the move back the other way.
