NEC to release optical disk recorder

.c Kyodo News Service

TOKYO, July 22 (Kyodo) - NEC Corp. said Thursday it will release on Sept. 21 a video recorder using optical disks, with a first-year sales target of 30,000 units.

The GigaStation is the first commercially viable optical disk recorder in the world, NEC said.

The new product adopts NEC's proprietary MVDISC format and uses optical disks with a diameter of 120 millimeters, the same as for ordinary compact disks.

With the MVDISC format, an optical disk has a memory capacity of 5.2 gigabytes, double that of the DVD-RAM format.

The GigaStation records programs for two hours in ordinary mode and four hours in long-play mode.

NEC will offer the GigaStation for 350,000 yen and optical disks for 3,900 yen apiece.

The machine records programs on one side of the disk, but NEC plans to introduce a two-side recording model in the future.
