'Wonderwood': Earnings, not takeover prospects, seen as key

Ainsworth builds on strength

Drew Hasselback
National Post

VANCOUVER - Charles Widman, a veteran forest industry consultant in Vancouver, calls oriented strandboard the "wonderwood."

OSB panel boards are not only cheaper to make than plywood, they can also be made out of tree species foresters used to consider useless.

The building material has simply revolutionized the building materials business.

Now, many investors have started gambling on the popularity of OSB resulting in some consolidation among producers.

Ainsworth Lumber Co. Ltd., which has developed a strong OSB business, has seen its share price climb dramatically in recent weeks as investors bet the Vancouver-based company could be a target for a takeover.

Ainsworth (ANS/TSE) hit a 52-week high of $12.85 on July 15. The stock has fallen back a bit. It closed yesterday at $10, a gain of 50¢. Still, that's a long way from the 52-week low of $2.35 it set on Oct. 8.

Reid Carter, a forest analyst with First Marathon Securities Ltd. in Vancouver, has a "buy" recommendation on the stock, though he doesn't have a target price.

The analyst's recommendation is based on the company's strong earnings performance, and not on the company's takeover prospects.

He expects Ainsworth to announce second-quarter earnings between $1.10 and $1.30 a share, a big jump from last year's loss of 36¢.

And this:

More bullish news for this sector:
* Tiaga Forest Co. reported earnings of .67 vs .21 last year, a 319% increase. Stock was up .95 yesterday
Are the others going to follow shortly ? hahahaha........
* Bloomberg reports Freddy-Mac expects the housing boom to continue in the USA, more fuel for the fire.
This is the key force driving this sector HIGHER........
