LSI Logic's 2.5 Gbit/S GigaBlaze(R) Cores Support New Physical Layer
Requirements of Next Generation I/Os

MILPITAS, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI), the industry leader in
high speed I/O technology, announced today that its current generation of GigaBlaze(R)
integrated gigabit per second CMOS transceiver cores support the physical requirements of
Next Generation I/O (NGIO).

LSI Logic's GigaBlaze cores meet NGIO's double-speed serial transfer rate of 2.5 Gbits/sec,
allowing designers to start development of NGIO technology products immediately. By
combining the high performance, low power, small size and cost advantages of CMOS
integrated transceivers with the ease of use of LSI Logic's CoreWare(R) methodology, the
GigaBlaze transceiver cores can be easily and quickly integrated into system-level ASICs to
implement the new NGIO technology.

The LSI Logic GigaBlaze transceiver cores were essential for the successful volume launch of
Fibre Channel products into the marketplace and they will also be key to the volume launch of
NGIO products. While discrete technology is adequate for limited volumes, the marketplace
requires a rapid transition to high-volume, cost-effective integrated systems on a chip where
the GigaBlaze cores and LSI Logic lead the industry.

LSI Logic achieved an industry milestone in 1996 with the introduction of the first Fibre
Channel compliant integrated transceiver cores operating at 1.0625 Gbits/sec. A second
milestone followed quickly thereafter when LSI Logic announced its second generation of
GigaBlaze transceiver cores, which were also Gigabit Ethernet compliant at 1.25 Gbits/sec.
LSI Logic's current (third) generation of GigaBlaze transceiver cores will support the latest
requirements for the NGIO Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet standards operating at serial
data transmission rates of 2.5, 2.125, 1.25 and 1.0625 Gbits/s.

LSI Logic is committed to maintaining the integrity of switched-fabric architectures,
contributing to subsequent modifications of the physical interface standards and advancing the
technology to higher levels of performance.

LSI Logic's GigaBlaze transceiver cores can be found today in a broad array of storage,
telecommunications, and computer applications including pioneering products from the market
leaders in Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, and System Area Networks (SAN) products.

"With the proven market experience of three generations of gigabit per second CMOS
transceiver cores, LSI Logic is the market leader in integrated transceivers. Today, our
customers can rapidly develop and bring to market high performance NGIO products with the
GigaBlaze G11 transceiver cores," said Marc Miller, Director of Computer Product Marketing
at LSI Logic. "LSI Logic is already preparing for the next millennium and development work
is underway on our fourth generation of multi-gigabit per second integrated transceivers for
the year 2000."

In addition to its high performance GigaBlaze cores, LSI Logic offers its customers everything
they need in high-speed I/O technology. LSI Logic's customers enjoy the benefits of its
experience in developing, integrating and shipping the industry's best high-speed I/O cores
and buffers including leading technologies like the Direct Rambus(R) D-RAC core,
HyperPHY(TM) cores, FlexCore(R) PCI-66 core and PCI, AGP, memory interface, SCSI
and LVDS buffers. About LSI Logic
