Alcatel Supplies Internet Dial-up Access Equipment to Chinese ISP
Business Wire - July 19, 1999 11:44
BEIJING, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 1999--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) today was chosen as the supplier of Internet dial-up access equipment for Xin Hai Technology Development Ltd., the operating arm of the NASD-listed Xin Hai Corp. (OTC BB:XNET), a leading ISP in China.

According to the contract, Alcatel will supply its Assured Access carrier class remote access concentrator for Internet dial-up for altogether 18,000 ports in the next two and a half years, with first deliveries scheduled fro the end of this month.

With a capacity of terminating over 2,000 ports in a single box, the Assured Access dial-up server offers the highest density, reliability and scalability in the industry today. Also included in the contract is Alcatel SMC, which provides extensive subscriber and service management, a comprehensive billing system, virtual private network services and other advanced services

"Alcatel is very glad to sign this agreement with Xin Net so shortly after the introduction of Alcatel's market-leading second generation RAC (remote access concentrator) solution to the Chinese market," said Martin de Prycker, President of the Alcatel Internet Access Division. "We're quite optimistic about the future Internet market in China in view of the booming information super-highway construction all over the country. With its Intelligent IP Platform (2IP) solution concept, Alcatel is ready to offer a full range of high-speed, end-to-end Internet access solutions to Chinese customers."

"After detailed analysis and careful comparison among several well-known suppliers, we've selected Alcatel as the partner for Xin Net," said Wei Xin, General Manager of Xin Hai Technology Development Ltd. "With the advanced Alcatel Internet access products, we are confident in remaining a forerunner in China's booming ISP market by constantly expanding our market presence."

Alcatel has been actively promoting and implementing its high-speed, end-to-end Internet solutions in China. It introduced its ADSL technology into China in 1996 for the first time by initiating a pilot project in Shanghai. Later on, several similar plot projects were implemented in Jiangsu, Heilongjiang, Zhejiong and Beijing. The first commercial ADSL deployment project started in the summer of 1998 in Fujian.

In September 1998, Alcatel has signed a multi-year framework agreement on ADSL with Guangdong PTA to deploy altogether 50,000 ADSL lines in the entire Guangdong Province, marking a major breakthrough in the commercial deployment of Alcatel ADSL technology in the China market. Last month, Alcatel was selected by Shanghai PTA to supply its advanced ADSL solution to Shanghai Hotline, a major part of the Shanghai Infoport project.

Martin de Prycker noted the contact with Xin Net has further expanded the range of Alcatel's Internet solutions offered to the China market -- not only the ADSL technology itself but also the end-to-end solution including RAS and SMC, which the leading edge networks require.

All the products included in the contract are part of the Alcatel 2IP(TM) Concept, launched at CeBIT in March this year. Alcatel 2IP provides operators with a complete Internet strategy, enabling innovative communications solutions. Through Alcatel's recent U.S. acquisitions, among which the Assured Access company, it allows network operators to offer corporate customers and end-users total Internet solutions using the latest, future proof, next generation Internet technology.
