There was 3 Japanesse Cruisers/Frigates in Port here last month. Not sure what the armament is. One looked quite a bit like a US Aegis class cruiser.

They got some assets, but even if they are of no more use then cannon fodder It would be something.

Assessment:

Capable of defending home islands against all existing and foreseeable military threats (China/Russia). Capable of limited protection of sea lanes out to 1,000 miles against existing and foreseeable naval threats (Russia). No capability to project military force abroad.

Trends:

Over past 10 years spending has increased slightly in real terms but personnel strength has dropped slightly due to reluctance of young people to enlist for military service. While Japan continues modest modernization programs, there appears to be no intention to do more than maintain present self-defense capabilities. No indication of efforts to develop any force projection capability with air or naval forces.
