Well, E, thank you for finally giving me what I asked for from the outset -- namely, that "animus toward" is accepted usage. :-) After all, I said I was willing to be persuaded.

At the same time, return the favor and admit that "animus against" is also established usage -- and in the very sense in which you insist is inappropriate. Remember, this whole brouhaha started when you challenged my use of "against."

BTW, the total number of references (546 vs. 486) doesn't really tell you that much, because after a certain point google.com begins bringing up imperfect matches (that is, use of one term -- animus -- without the other, or vice versa).
