William -- Lets review a couple of points: China views China as the center of the universe -- not the US. China is adrift without a unifying ideology -- nationalism holds it together. Nothing strengthens nationalism like a good fight, especially if you win. Taiwan is viewed by China as part of the Chinese nation, period. The Taiwanese are going through their own political machinations and asserting their nationhood in the process. China is in economic trouble and could use a good diversion. Taking a couple of islands around Taiwan is all they need to do -- by force -- to make their point.

Here is the question: Do you think for one second that the US would fire upon China if they seized some rocky little islands off Taiwan's coast? China sees Clinton as weak and lacking in options. The ball is in their court and they will play it when it suits them -- they don't give a rat's ass about Clinton. BTW, what Clinton basically said was 'golly, if they invade Taiwan we would be really upset'.
