I understood Scumbria's 'him' to mean Raza, giving the opposite interpretation as you present above.

Scumbria said the opposite -

"Kumar said Raza wanted to sell the company's $1.9 billion new
factory in Dresden, which is expected to begin production early
next year. Sanders didn't.

If so, it sounds like it was time for him to go."

I think selling fab 30 is an oversimplification.

I suspect that an intelligent businessman may have wanted to partner on Fab 30. Maybe selling a portion - say 50%.

It would be an extremely attractive fab for a wafer foundry or third party company such as siemens, LSI, TSMC, UMC etc.

In addition other ways to reduce costs and increase margins is to cut off distributor margins, sell direct to small white box suppliers, leverage MB/Chip sets etc.

Other ways may have been to shut down SDC and move fab development to Fab 30 etc.

Just my 2 cents.

regards,

Kash Johal.

Kapkan Re <<...Raza was right in pushing to sell FAB30>>

I highly doubt that anyone was pushing for the outright sell of FAB30. But considering that there is currently a shortage in 0.25 and below foundry space, leasing part of the fab to another foundry to generate much needed revenues is a reasonable idea.

Also AMD is spending/investing money to develop processes at 0.18 as well as copper. If it is possible to get further return on investment by "fabing" for some one else (manufacturing Alpha chip for Compaq at 0.18 comes to mind) its once again a fiscally responsible thing to do.

AMD desperately needs fiscal discipline which it currently does not have. If Raza departure was due to this issue, as an AMD share holder I find it very disturbing. Depending on the replacement I am looking into selling part of my holding at a ~20% lose. For now I continue to hold.

Kap,

I am surprised that you think that Raza was right in pushing to sell FAB30.

As others have pointed out, I was saying that it is ridiculous to sell FAB30. Many have stated on this thread that FAB30 is the key to AMD's future.
