Bush Campaign Lists Democratic Senator As Backer
Updated 7:36 AM ET July 20, 1999

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential frontrunner George W. Bush's campaign said Monday it had mistakenly listed Louisiana Democratic Sen. John Breaux as one of its financial backers -- an error which caused a flurry in political circles.

"It was a mistake by our campaign, we're very sorry and we apologize to the senator," said Bush campaign spokeswoman Mindy Tucker.

The Texas Governor, who leads the Republican presidential field by a wide margin, listed Breaux as having donated $1,000 in its latest quarterly financial disclosure statement to the Federal Election Committee last week. In fact, the $1,000 contribution came from Breaux's son, John Breaux Jr. who is a Washington lobbyist.

The listing was picked up by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics, which put out a press release on it without first checking with Breaux's office. That prompted an avalanche of calls to Breaux, who has been a strong supporter of President Clinton over the years.

"We're pretty angry, it's caused no end of problems," said one official in Breaux's office.
