CONE TWEAKS CAP-ITAL HILL

By MAGGIE HABERMAN
NY Post

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yankee hurler David Cone - at City Hall yesterday for a ceremony honoring his perfect game - threw a beanball at Hillary Rodham Clinton for claiming she's been a longtime fan of the Bronx Bombers.

At a packed reception where Mayor Giuliani - the First Lady's likely U.S. Senate rival next year - gave him the Key to the City for Sunday's gem against the Montreal Expos, Cone told the crowd that Hizzoner is a "sincere" Yankee follower.

Turning to Giuliani, he said: "Mr. Mayor, I'd like to say, on behalf of all the Yankee players ... how your sincerity as a Yankee fan really comes across. We see it.

"I mean, there's a lot of politicians that say they're baseball fans and put on the cap and ..." Cone added, his words cut off by a roaring chorus of "oohs" and cheers from the audience.

Giuliani, who was at the House that Ruth Built for Cone's perfect game - the third in Yankee history - smiled in the background.

Cone's comments were a thinly-veiled dig at Clinton's recent claim that she's a Yankee fan.

The First Lady - a lifelong Chicago Cub fan - donned a Bomber cap at a White House reception for the team several weeks ago, claiming she was a closet Yankee fan for life.

Cone later backed off when a reporter asked him if he thinks the Yankees are becoming a political football.

"Well, I don't know," he replied. "I mean, stranger things have happened." He said he was simply pointing out that Giuliani has been a "true fan of the Yankees" for all his life.

Cone made baseball history with his 6-0 win over the Expos - the 16th perfect game ever. Of his 88 pitches, 68 were strikes. The game took place with Don Larsen, who pitched the only perfect game in a World Series, and Yogi Berra, his catcher in that game, looking on.

Last year, David Wells - who now plays for Toronto - was honored by Giuliani for his perfect game against the Minnesota Twins.

Giuliani said all of New York is "living in the reflected glory" of Cone's success, as he handed the hurler his third key. The first two came after the Yankees' World Series wins in 1996 and 1998.

Giuliani gave the pitcher a key ring, bearing the city's seal, so his awards won't get lost, and proclaimed the day "David Cone Day."

On hand for the ceremony were Yankee manager Joe Torre and catcher Joe Girardi, who both Cone and Giuliani said deserves a share of the credit for the exceptional game.

"It's overwhelming to see all the Yankee fans," Cone said. "It's a day I'll never forget."

Earlier, Torre, Girardi and Cone bowed their heads in prayer as Giuliani called for a moment of silence for John F. Kennedy Jr., who disappeared along with his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren when their plane crashed Friday night.

Hillary Clinton went in for her yearly check-up. When it was
finished, she asked her gynecologist how everything was. He said he was pleased and that she was in great shape, and that she was pregnant.

"No way!" she exclaimed, but he assured her she was most definitely
pregnant.

She stormed out of the examining room, grabbed the receptionist's
phone and dialed the private line in the Oval Office.

When Bill answered the phone, she shouted, "I can't believe it! I'm
pregnant! You got me pregnant!"

The president didn't say anything, and she screamed, "Didn't you hear
me?? I'm pregnant! You got me pregnant!"

Hesitantly, the president asked, "Um...who IS this?"
