And then reading the responses, Oh Cripes! Never got an answer to that calendar question, did you? (Plenty of political/travel advice.)

The answer is that China (and Moslem or Hebrew or etc..countries) will not avoid the y2k problem if the OS uses a "western calendar" (for lack of a better term.) Any help here with the proper term appreciated.

It doesn't matter what calendar is hanging on the wall or what language they are yammering over the key board or what characters appear on the screen or what jibberish spits out of the printer.

And you'd be amazed at just how long it took some of the countries named above to figure this out...which is one reason remediation abroad is in such bad shape...they got a VERY late start compared to the US.
