Corel unveils software plans

NEW YORK -- At MacWorld Expo here on Wednesday Corel had good news and what could be bad news for Macintosh users, announcing several new software applications, but also saying that it will not upgrade the current code base for WordPerfect for the Mac OS.

The new applications, all touted as "Internet-ready," are: a Mac version of Corel Print Office 2000; Corel Print House 2000 for the Mac; and Corel Custom Photo for the Mac.

Meanwhile, the software company will release by August 16 the WordPerfect 3.5 Enhancement Pack, a free upgrade package for the word processor. However, this is the last update of the current WordPerfect code for the Mac, and technical support for WordPerfect 3.5 for the Mac will end as of Oct. 29 this year, officials said.

The source code is old, and certain incompatibilities with the current MacOS 8.6 prevent users from accessing some features, officials said. When the upgrade pack is released, more details about its compatibility with the Mac OS will be offered.

But whether Corel will offer a brand-new version of WordPerfect, rewritten from the ground up for upcoming versions of the Mac OS, is open to question....
