AOL, Ameritech in Cable-Modem Trial
Chicago -- Ameritech Corp. will offer cable-modem access to America Online Inc. this fall in a trial to show the viability of multiple data-service providers on a cable network.

The Baby Bell said its Chicago-area Americast two-way digital system would offer subscribers a choice of broadband access to AOL or Ameritech's own Internet-service provider, Ameritech.net, utilizing standards-based cable modems.

Ameritech executive vice president of communications and information products Tom Richards said the companies had not yet determined details such as pricing and the exact location of the trial.

Ameritech vice president of product management Kimberly Price added that by limiting nodes to 500 homes passed, the telco could open its network to customers of multiple ISPs without a degradation of data speeds or other potential problems cited by open-access critics such as AT&T Corp. and Excite@Home.

"Our primary objective is to demonstrate once and for all that a cable company can offer service to more than one ISP," Richards said. "We don't buy the position that it's technically not feasible to provide access to more than one ISP."

Ameritech also announced plans to begin deploying high-speed digital-subscriber-line service with a target of 3 million homes accessed by the end of this year. AOL has agreed to offer its subscribers DSL access over Ameritech's systems.
