Safeguard Scientifics Appoints New Senior Vice President
Noted IT Attorney John Halvey to Direct and Manage Company's Strategies
WAYNE, Pa., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE: SFE - news), an information technology holding company that develops and operates Internet-related companies, today announced the appointment of noted IT attorney John Halvey to the position of senior vice president. Safeguard, whose overall Internet-related strategy is focused on the areas of eCommerce, network infrastructure, and enterprise applications, will look to Halvey to help set the company's strategic direction and manage a group of companies in the enterprise applications space. Safeguard created Halvey's role to help advance the company's aggressive initiative to become the partner of choice for innovative entrepreneurs and their companies.

''He will play a lead role as we evaluate, structure and nurture our relationships with forward-thinking Internet start-ups that support our strategic direction. At Safeguard, Halvey will assist in analyzing potential Safeguard relationships, electing which ones to pursue, negotiating the terms of those relationships and managing a select group of Safeguard partner companies. He will report directly to Harry Wallaesa, Safeguard's president and COO.

Halvey, who left his position as partner in the New York office of the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy where he was also head of the Global Technology Transactions Group to join Safeguard's executive team, brings more than 13 years of legal and business development experience to the company.

At Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, Halvey practiced in all areas of computer and technology law, with particular emphasis on information technology-related transactions. His work spanned key segments of the information technology industry including telecommunications, e-commerce and software. His specialties included information technology and business process outsourcing, technology joint ventures, strategic alliances, licensing agreements, acquisitions and financing, and venture capital transactions. At Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, Halvey founded and managed the firm's Technology and Intellectual Property practice, which grew to more than 25 dedicated professionals under his leadership.

Halvey has represented companies in many of the largest technology, telecommunications and business process outsourcing transactions to date, including BellSouth, General Motors, DuPont, AT&T, Alcatel, Xerox, Boeing, Hughes and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He has also worked closely with a number of privately held and VC-funded technology start-ups.

Halvey's work has been the subject of numerous articles in national business and technology magazines, including Forbes, Information Week, Computer World and CIO Magazine. In addition, Crain's named Halvey to its list of the ''40 Most Successful People Under 40 in New York City'' in 1995.

An active participant in the technology community, Halvey was a founder and served as general counsel for the International Information Technology Users Group (IITUG). Halvey has also authored four books on technology- related topics. His latest, Business Process Outsourcing Transactions: Process, Strategies and Contracts, is scheduled for publication this fall.

Halvey earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University where he graduated magna cum laude and a master's of business administration from the Roberto C. Goizueta Business School of Emory University and his J.D. degree from the Emory University School of Law.
