Mike, If you look at page 140 of the "Gorilla Game" under "It's all about Value Chains, you will see Figure 6.1. (I wish had the capability of scanning it onto my computer). At any rate, it shows 3 "blocks" or maybe links of the chain, the first block contains "technology, products, and systems". From the book (emphasis my own): "The beginning of a value chain, shown on the left-hand side of the chart, is where the product offerings get assembled. It is typically made up of technology providers , component manufacturers, subsystem assemblers, all leading up to a product offer. This is the domain of product architectures and where the gorillas live. Everyone else in the chain, however, must cooperate for these architectures to get adopted. " Rambus is most definitely described in the paragraph. Rambus doesn't fabricate the chips, they license their chip "architecture". IF and it's a big if, as it says in the last sentence of that paragraph, everyone else in the supply chain gets on board, voila, RMBS becomes a gorilla. There is still a chimp out there (VIA Tech) that is trying to take on INTC by using this transition uncertainty by selling a RMBS "competitor". INTC up until just recently has steadfastly stated that they would not support PC133 chipsets, but had their hand forced by Vias purchase of Cyrix from National Semi. Vias is trying to circumvent their licensing problems with INTC by this maneuver. It's just like Tate said at the RMBS analyst meeting, RMBS is in the middle of the tornado. I'm taking a "calculated" risk that the chimp VIAS will get squashed by the gorilla INTC, and a new gorilla RMBS will emerge. That's about as detailed a summary as you're going to get from me on this thread, if you're interested and want to know more, I suggest you lurk the RMBS thread, this topic has been hashed and re-hashed ad infinitum...... bp
