Well one reason I can think of is they plan on hiring a bunch of new people and want to offer std option packages (2K for engr, 10K director, etc) with less stock. That was one reason Dell used to split so often... amzn needs new people for all of its new ventures. Thats all I can come up with.

Yes i can speculate as to why for one they had just split there stock in January (3 for 1 was giving in January just before the run to 200.) Also it looks like Amzn has split there stock close to every six months in the chart below. As i stated before the reason for this stock spilt is that the management of this company is confident about the future of e-commerce and there company's growth going forward.
