I am not long MPPP nor am I short. Nor do I intend on playing it either way. But I think some people are missing out on some of the key factors in this company. First "they own no technology" but neither does Broadcast.com or CBS or many other companies that derive their revenues from advertising or specialty programming.
"They have few recognized artists" This I view as a very shortsighted view of the company. Most music purchases today are from 13 to 25 year olds who have the highest computer use of any age group. They also tend to be the most influential demographic when it comes to new music genres. How many of today's unknown MP3.com artists will be discovered by this generation of computer users. It will be much easier for these artists to rise to the top in this medium.
Lastly people talk about competing technologies. MP3 is an open standard, its FREE. This is the most important element driving the internet today. MP3 isn't where it is today because it is the best technology, its here because its good technology that is free.
While I may not agree with the hypervaluations given to MP3.com as a business I think it is very premature to write of MP3 as a format for delivering music/audio to the masses for quite some time to come.
