Every major character reveals unexpected depths and complexities, and the principals show growth, which cuts against the charge of stereotyping. Cher's father, for example, says:"You divorce wives, not children", and obviously plots to bring the two of them together because of his fondness for the boy, which is contrary to his image as a hardass. Cher herself is not much like Emma, except in superficial ways, like meddling and getting a comeuppance. She is sweeter and more ingenuous from the start, and although she is vain, it has a childlike quality which makes her epiphany very plausible, as she appreciates her friends and realizes that she is in love....
