Chas -

1) conspiring with your competition to split markets or set prices is a violation of U.S. antitrust laws.

2) Micron's quarter is now over half gone. They have apparently been adding to inventory the first half. Unless they are willing to shock the Street with lower revenue and (again) higher inventory, they've got to start shipping everything they can now.

3) PC OEMs' ops folks are not fools. They understand the current supply/demand situation. PC pricing is brutally competitive; PC OEMs MUST wring out every nickel of cost. So it'll take more than short-term manipulation of the DRAM spot market to raise contract prices. Contract prices continue to fall around the world, and as of the last survey I've seen (http://www.nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com/wcs/leaf?CID=onair/asabt/resch/77574) are below $6 in Asia, and well below $7 elsewhere.

chas, the ONLY way to manipulate pricing is to hold inventory. with up to 10 weeks in the storage containers already, micron is hard pressed to store more. even if they do, when they unleash this inventory, dram will collapse and mu will be worse off than if they never held the inventory. remember 16 mb plunge from $10 to $1.40 in about one year? that IS what happens when inventory is unleashed.
