Tracking Stocks

There's an interesting article in this morning's San Jose Mercury News about tracking stocks and Quantum. It will be interesting to see which way shares move after watching QNTM buck the trend over the last few months. Perhaps the bowling pins are being set-up only to be knocked right back down.

If Quantum shareholders approve the plan, QNTM as it exists today would disappear in about a week's time, to be replaced by QHDD -- the hard-drive division -- and QDSS -- the storage systems sector. And unlike some other tracking stocks, which have been launched via initial public offerings, Quantum officials have pitched a distribution of shares to existing shareholders. The stock prices would be independently determined, and for every two shares an investor owns in QNTM, they would receive one share of QHDD and two of QDSS.

Yeah right. That's why all the conference calls are so cheerful. <g>

Actually, things have to get better from here don't they?
