Yes, people are masks, and often do not think much. On the other hand, the very lack of a rich inner life may mean that there is not much beyond what is on the surface in the first place, and therefore that there is nothing much hidden...It is true enough that there is a potential breaking point in us all, and it is hard to know where it is until tested. As for whether people are trustworthy at all, I guess that depends on how far you wish to rely on them. Only very close friends and family members are candidates for very much trust...Understanding is difficult, mostly, I think, because individual experience is so diverse, and there are so many different degrees of assimilation and reflection. On the other hand, it is often extraordinary what can be conveyed, as when one watches a foreign flick...Interestingly, although there is, as you say, a primitive element which has little to do with our identities, it is also a guarantee of a certain degree of universality, insofar as all humans must deal with fundamental drives and emotions...
