2) If Qwest's deal goes through, could we see some of the other LD carriers (T & WCOM) try to take over some of the other RBOCs?

I doubt it... in order to get this deal, QWST has to give up their LD customers in areas where USW has local service. Not so much a big deal to QWST, but can you imagine if T bought out Bell South and had to give up all their Atlanta customers? Or WCOM bought out Bell Atlantic and had to give up their DC and NYC customers? These guys have too many long distance customers in any given area that they don't want to give them up. QWST must not have the same market penetration ;-).

IF on the other hand, the govt decides that USW has opened up enough of their local market that QWST/USW can sell LD and Local in the same place, I would not be surprised to see T & WCOM each grab a RBOC (just one). But that's still a ways away.
