I think the media's role in this is a tad bit more that just the expression of a symbiotic relationship. They have editorial control over what get's covered and most certainly what get's wall to wall coverage. So you must always ask the question, once the cameras arrive, are they there to film the crowd or did their presence "create" the crowd?

We recently had a small group of contractors "shut down" Highway 70 in a protest over minority hiring. It got local wall to wall coverage, and a group of onlookers gathered on a overpass to watch. Once the protestors were arrested, one of the news anchors actually wondered out loud how much longer the ancillary crowd would remain posing an additional potential traffic problem. I looked at my husband and said, as soon as the helicopters and TV vans are gone, the crowd will disappear. Sure enough, the media left, the crowd left, and everything was back to normal.
