Low end PC's will get cheap but there will always be a market for higher end machines; especially for business, game play, graphic design etc.

Believe it or not Linux just isn't easy enough to use for a newbie user and even for win95 users trying to transition. Regardless of how much you think MSFT apps are bloatware they have the best, easiest to use desktop paradigm. It has at least a 1-2 year generation lead on all current desktops; other than possibly the MAC.

Regarding freePC "idiot-level" (as you said) shoring up the cash for a Win 2000 license I'd say that's not likely since they're already too cheap to buy their own PC. They are more likely to just break the contract and return the machine ... probably after spending hours on the phone with the providers tech support staff complaining and frustrated. End result is the providers will need to provide Win 2000 licenses to there customers or take back their freePC initiative before they lose their shirts.

As I stated, I see the eventual trend to servers becoming thinner and clients become fatter. Servers of the future will appear to meld with the network cable providing uniform secure access to persistent data storage; essentially "disk wrappers". The clients will have the intelligence to connect, access, and process the information. This idea works considering price/performance ratio for desktops is going down; cheap power.

p.s. hey we didn't insult each other ... could this be love ?

Cheers
James
