I have not checked out all postings yet to this thread so someone else may have answered this question. I am simply catching up before going away for consulting and a weekend with friends.

jealous=possessive of that which one has, as in jealously guarding.

envy=wanting something that someone else has.

The two have been so used interchangeably that it makes my skin crawl. The words convey two very different emotions and states of mind.
