Michael, I thank you for your thoughtful post.

The problem we all have in the news business is making sure our viewers are covered on all fronts. I would disagree though that
"no Network is unique." While we are all in the news business, at CNBC, during the day, we are in the BUSINESS NEWS business.

We don't want people tuning out of business news when something of a major scale is going on that is non-business oriented. Therefore we have general news updates to keep you up to date on ALL the news... so you don't feel you are missing something and have to turn elsewhere. It's the same reason an all sports radio station still does traffic and weather and general news, while the thrust of the programming remains sports.

From 5 am through 7:30pm CNBC specializes in coverage of the markets and offers periodic updates of general news. During ITS broadcast day, for example, MSNBC specializes in general news but offers business news updates provided by CNBC. When the market is tanking, or setting records, MSNBC will frequently ask us for longer or more detailed reports. Thus they 'reallocate their assets' if you will pardon the expression, based on the news. We do much the same thing at CNBC. Our general thrust is and always is business news, but some assets are reallocated to general news when management believes it is in the viewers' best interests. And it is indeed management that makes these decisions and they are not easy ones to make. When to take a news conference, how long to take it, when to get out of it, when to go back to it.... these are not decisions made on whim. They are carefully made and thought out by experienced news executives who have excellent news judgement and intimate knowledge of their respective network's mandate. They sit in the control room and take charge of the production.. sometimes literally calling the shots. And to be frank, they are damned good at it.

In theory, this should supply MSNBC viewers with what they need and CNBC viewers with what they need. Can we please everyone all the time? Of course not.

Prime Time programming at CNBC does not claim to provide market coverage, thought it does at such times as market action warrants.

Again, I do not speak for management, but this is my understanding of how things work and it makes sense to me.
